Foundation Update - May/June 2009

Message from Cherlyn L. Spencer

Executive Director, Alameda County Health Care Foundation

Cherlyn0906It is that time of year that the Foundation takes a breath and thinks of the many donors and organizations that have supported us this year. Our fiscal year ends June 30, 2009. We are still counting but have raised to date $1.5 million.

We are very appreciative of this mark because of the negative impact on the economy that has affected foundations and individual gifts making it more difficult this year, than any other year, to raise funds. Our patients at the Medical Center probably have experienced even more difficulty which it is why we continue to raise funds to ensure that they receive quality health care.

Cancer Services - Comprehensive Cancer Services at the Medical Center are composed of the Pathfinders Outreach and Cancer Navigation Programs, designed to provide screening and outreach to the community, navigation for all patients referred for breast evaluation, and support groups for all cancer patients.

Comprehensive Chronic Disease Management Initiative which includes Childhood Obesity Prevention Program - is a comprehensive approach to the issue of overweight and obesity a leading cause to diabetes type II.

Youth Violence Prevention Program - Alameda County has experienced a recent surge in violence claiming the lives of young people at an unprecedented rate. The Medical Center offers programs to break the cycle of youth violence.

Angiography Suite Acquisition Campaign - This project includes renovation and purchase of an Angiography Suite. Angiography is commonly used to diagnose and treat forms of heart disease and trauma to the cardiovascular system. It also is an imaging method that allows doctors to view veins, arteries, and other tissues that cannot be seen through other imaging such as MRI and x-ray.

Thomas J. Long Foundation Supports  Cancer Navigator Program

A very special thank you to the Thomas J. Long Foundation for their generous $25,000 gift to the ACHCF for ACMC’s Cancer Navigator Program. This kind of support is vital in enabling our program staff to assist cancer patients through a painful and often confusing process.
